  1. Panic- When a storm is approaching, there
are many tasks, to complete. Gluing your eyes to the TV for constant updates, or flipping out won’t accomplish any of them.  Stay cool and focused on what needs addressing and prioritizing these tasks.
  2. Wait Until the Last Minute to Prepare- Putting up storm panels under rainy and windy conditions is dangerous.  Getting gas and food necessities at the last minute will have you waiting in long lines.  Early preparation will help relieve building stress.
  3. Tape Your Windows- This does nothing but leave adhesive on your glass!  Don’t do it!  Glass will shatter.  A better solution is affordable Clear Panels that the do-it-yourselfer can install.  You can find these at online websites such as www.ClearPanelShutters.com.
  4. Shop for Batteries and Canned Goods at the Last Minute.  These are the first items to go.  Stock up on these nonperishable goods in advance.  It’s difficult to find the battery sizes you need when a storm is imminent.  Canned milk and canned ravioli are the first to go.  If these are items you use buy them in the beginning of the season.
  5. Neglect to Discuss Emergency Egress Plans.- If you should be faced with trying to exit a home.  The time to discuss what to do and where to go is prior to the arrival of the situation.  Having these discussions ahead of time, especially with children is a must.
  6. Go Outside and See What’s Going On- Metal Storm Panels and shutters can put your curiosity at its height, but don’t risk picking the wrong time.  Thinking that the eye of the storm is a safe time to go outside is extremely dangerous.  Consider getting clear Lexan panels to allow you to see out.
  7. Forget to Include Your Pet’s Needs in Storm Preparation – Remember their food, shelter, water and bathroom needs!  Most shelters will not allow pets, so if you plan on going to one, have a plan for where you pet will stay.
  8. Allow Children to Play in Flooded Areas or Standing Water After the Storm – Downed wires, snakes, and unsanitary conditions are all present.  Prevent a potential accident from happening.
  9. Forget Your Non-Edible Needs – Remember to get items like paper plates, cups, dishes, forks and knives.  This will save you trying to wash these items when you most likely won’t have running water.
  10. Assume Your Power Will Be Back on Within a Day or Two – Plan to have plenty of clean clothes.  You may want to do a load of laundry to ensure you will have clean clothes available if there is no power for weeks.  Consider any medications you will need.  Make preparations to keep them cool if needed.
